Choosing the right heating system
Picking a heating system for your home isn't a one-size-fits-all decision. Climate, home size, insulation level, fuel availability, and budget all factor in. In Massachusetts, the most common systems are forced-air furnaces, heat pumps (including cold-climate variants), and boilers paired with radiators or radiant flooring.
Heat pumps vs. furnaces
Heat pumps move heat rather than burning fuel, making them dramatically more efficient — often 2–4× the output per unit of energy compared to traditional systems. Modern cold-climate heat pumps perform well below freezing, and pair beautifully with state rebates and federal tax credits.
When to repair vs. replace
The 50% rule is a good starting point: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of a new system, and your equipment is past two-thirds of its expected life, replacement usually pays back faster than another patch job.
Sizing and load calculations
An oversized system short-cycles, runs inefficiently, and wears out faster. A properly sized system runs longer, quieter cycles and keeps temperatures even room-to-room. Always ask your installer for a Manual J load calculation.
Maintenance basics
Change filters every 1–3 months. Get a professional tune-up annually. Keep outdoor units clear of leaves and snow. Listen for new noises — they're the cheapest diagnostic tool you have.
